I'm not afraid anymore.

Maize is a powerful plant spirit found within the ruins in the Glen. She is the guardian of the Glen, but has become weakened due to the lack of sunlight. She has green skin with plant-like features, blonde hair in a braid, with long bangs covering her left eye and part of her right eye. Her hair has a few leaves and wilted flowers forming a circle around her head, much like that of a flower crown. She also wears a jade-colored dress that reaches to her knees. When Niko first finds her, she is lying on the floor surrounded by vines which appear to originate from her.

In OneShot: World Machine Edition, Maize's bio reads:

"A benevolent and powerful plant spirit, acting as a sort of guardian for the Glen. The last of her kind, her life force has slowly dwindled in the absence of the sun's light. After all of these cold hungry years, her only wish is to see the sun once more."

Personality[]

Maize is a kind and protective being with a strong sense of altruism. Even in her weakened state, she does her best to guard and protect the Glen, and even willingly gives her life to help Niko on their quest.

Background[]

Maize was the guardian of the Glen up until the first sun died. Because she is essentially a plant, her health began deteriorating shortly after this event due to the lack of sunlight. According to Calamus, she went to the ruins and caused vines to block doorways and paths. Once encountered by Niko and the Player, Maize requests for Niko to lend her the Sun so she can feel its light one last time. Upon doing so, the paths blocked by vines will be accessible. Upon returning to the area where Maize was originally found, the Player and Niko find that Maize has disappeared, leaving both the Sun as well as a kernel of corn behind.

WARNING! The following section contains Solstice spoilers. If you haven't played OneShot nor have done a Solstice run yet or if you wish not to be heavily spoiled, feel free to turn away from this section.

During Solstice, Maize holds the land together with her vines. This causes her to lose much of her strength. When Niko asks if she'd like for them to lend her the Sun, she refuses, fearing that the vines might retreat, leaving the land to collapse. Later, when Niko asks if she can repair the broken bridges, she uses the last of her strength to assist Niko on their quest, which kills her. She is left completely immobile and consumed by vines.

Trivia[]

  • Eliza was the one who created Maize's design.
  • Maize is likely derived from the word maiz, which means "corn" in Spanish. This is referenced by the fact that she leaves a kernel of corn behind when she dies.
  • Maize was originally going to be male, but was changed to be female because Eliza "can't draw guys".
  • Maize is quite ancient.[1]
