OneShot is a game developed in a modified version of RPG Maker 2003 by Eliza Velasquez and Nightmargin, released on June 30th, 2014. You play the role of a god who must guide the protagonist, Niko, through a strange world inhabited by robots, with the ultimate goal of saving the world and returning Niko home.

A being known as the Entity will break the fourth wall in multiple ways, from opening error messages addressing the player's name to changing their desktop background. If you manually close the game's window or quit the game and relaunch afterwards, you are told that Niko is dead and that you killed them which will end the game, hence the title "OneShot". In the remake, closing the game manually instead saves the game, and refraining from doing so through the entire playthrough earns you the achievement "Oneshot", a reference to the original version.

Saving the game is done by resting at the beds that are found in the game's world. Going to bed closes the game automatically, and upon opening the game, you are greeted by a dream sequence that entails how Niko used to live before being mysteriously brought to this world.

The game was made in a month for the 2014 Indie Game Maker Contest, and was remade and extended by the original team with the addition of GIRakaCHEEZER in 2016 in RPG Maker XP and published by Degica. The features added include the ability to save the game by closing the window, additional playthroughs, and more permanent consequences.

On OneShot's 5th Anniversary, Nightmargin tweeted with a short video showcasing a console port for the game (a Japanese mirror tweet was made as well) announcing its release. Some teasers during the port's development were posted by GIR prior to the anniversary. On September 22, 2022, the game was released on consoles under the name of OneShot: World Machine Edition on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

Summary[]

You are to guide a child through a mysterious world on a mission to restore its long-dead sun.

...Of course, things are never that simple.

The world knows you exist.

The consequences are real.

Saving the world may be impossible.

You only have one shot.

Reception[]

The original version of the game has been tagged a "Featured Game" in rpgmaker.net and has been downloaded 54,000+ times.

OneShot also currently has a 10/10 rating and an estimation of 23,000+ reviews on Steam, with a percentage of 98% of the user reviews for the game positive. Additionally, it currently has a score of 80 on Metacritic and a User Score of 8.8. [1]

OneShot was also a nominee in the PC category of 2017's Golden Joystick Awards.[2]

World Machine Edition[]

OneShot: World Machine Edition is the official name for the console port of OneShot. Unlike the Freeware or Steam versions, World Machine Edition is not made from the RPG Maker game engines, but instead with FMod. The new engine allows the game to work on consoles. Various trailers show many new features or changes, such as movement not being confined to the grid, a simulated "desktop", a "Friends" database, a new UI for Fast Travel, and more.[3]

Despite being an "edition", the narrative is identical to the Steam Remake's version of events.

World Machine Edition was released on September 22nd, 2022 for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Series X/S, and PlayStation 4.
